    Vailed Sentiments

    di Lila Abu-Lughod

Lila Abu-Lughod lived with a community of Bedouins in the Western Desert of Egypt for nearly two years, studying gender relations and the oral lyric poetry through which women and young men express personal feelings. The poems are haunting, the evocation of emotional life vivid. But her analysis also reveals how deeply implicated poetry and sentiment are in the play of power and the maintenance of a system of social hierarchy. What begins as a puzzle about a single poetic genre becomes a reflection on the politics of sentiment and the relationship between ideology and human experience.

    Northanger Abbey

    Uncle Tom’s Cabin

    di Harriet Beecher Stowe

The novel that changed the course of American history

Published in 1852, Harriet Beecher Stowe’s novel was a powerful indictment of slavery in America. Describing the many trials and eventual escape to freedom of the long-suffering, good-hearted slave Uncle Tom, it aimed to show how Christian love can overcome any human cruelty. Uncle Tom’s Cabin has remained controversial to this day, seen as either a vital milestone in the anti-slavery cause or as a patronising stereotype of African-Americans, yet it played a crucial role in the eventual abolition of slavery and remains one of the most important American novels ever written.

    Oroonoko

    di Aphra Behn

A new single-volume edition of an early anti-slavery novel

When Prince Oroonoko’s passion for the virtuous Imoinda arouses the jealousy of his grandfather, the lovers are cast into slavery and transported from Africa to the colony of Surinam. Oroonoko’s noble bearing soon wins the respect of his English captors, but his struggle for freedom brings about his destruction. Inspired by Aphra Behn’s visit to Surinam, Oroonoko reflects the author’s romantic views of native peoples as being in “the first state of innocence, before man knew how to sin.” The novel also reveals Behn’s ambiguous attitude toward slavery: while she favored it as a means to strengthen England’s power, her powerful and moving work conveys its injustice and brutality.

This new single-volume edition of Oroonoko includes a carefully modernized text accompanied by an introduction, chronology, explanatory notes and suggestions for further reading.

    Selected Poems

    di Robert Burns

This selection gives equal weight to the two aspects of Robert Burns’s reputation, as a lyricist and as a much-loved Scottish poet. Placing works in probable order of composition, it includes lyrics to his most well known songs, such as the nostalgic “Auld Lang Syne,” the romantic “A Red, Red Rose,” and the patriotic “Scots What Hae.” As a poet, Burns wrote with deceptive simplicity and imaginative sympathy, and demonstrated enormous range—from comic dramatic monologues such as Holy Willie’s Prayer, which mocks hypocrisy, to narratives including the celebrated Tam O’ Shanter, about the ghostly visions of a drunk.

Krapp’s Last Tape and Other Shorter Plays

    di Samuel Beckett

Krapp’s Last Tape was first performed by Patrick Magee at the Royal Court Theatre in October 1958, and described as ‘a solo, if that is the word, for one voice and two organs: one human, one mechanical. It fills few pages. It is perhaps the most original and important play of its length ever written.’ (Roy Walker)

The present volume brings together Krapp’s Last Tape and Beckett’s other shorter works or ‘dramaticules’ written for the stage. It will be complemented by a forthcoming Faber edition of dramatic works written for radio and screen.

Arranged in chronological order of composition, these shorter plays exhibit the laconic means and compassionate ends of Beckett’s dramatic vision.

KRAPP ‘Here I end this reel. Box – [Pause.] – three, spool – [Pause.] – five. [Pause.] Perhaps my best years have gone. When there was a chance of happiness. But I wouldn’t want them back. Not with the fire in me now. No, I wouldn’t want them back. [Staring motionless before him.]
